When it was officially announced on Monday that Urban Meyer was to be Ohio State’s new football coach, the entire collegiate football world pretty much knew already. This wasn’t news to us.

Despite being directly asked, on the air, on ESPN’s coverage of the Nebraska- Michigan game, he said “there was no truth” to the rumors that he would become Ohio State’s next coach.

Wait, lying? Ohio State? Looks like he’ll fit right it.

Okay, okay. I’ll cut him some slack. Maybe he was on media lockdown. Maybe he didn’t want to steal the thunder away from the game he was covering. Michigan was stealing enough thunder as it was, and would continue to do the next week. (Go Blue!)

The fact that Meyer’s continued interaction with Ohio State officials forced ESPN to take him off the coverage of the OSU/Michigan game on the 26th pretty much solidified the rumors.

It got me thinking: Is Meyer the kind of coach who wants to really form a team, recruit multiple classes and really meld a great program? Or is he too busy with side projects and looking for better opportunities along the way? Now, there’s no doubt that he’s a really great coach (we’ll go over his accolades in a minute) but what’s really his M.O.?

Let’s take a look at where he’s been.

1986-87: Ohio State grad assistant coach
1988-89: Illinois State assistant coach
1990-95: Colorado State assistant coach
1996-2000: Notre Dame assistant coach
2001-2002: Bowling Green head coach
**2001** Named Mid-American Conference Coach of the year
2003-04: Utah head coach, leading the Utes to two Mountain West Conference championships
2003: Named national Coach of the Year by The Sporting News.
2004: Named national Coach of the Year by Pro Football Weekly and the winner of the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award.
2003-04: Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year for both seasons.
December 2004: Signs 7 year contract to become head coach at Florida
2005: Coaches Florida to a 9-3 record
Jan. 8, 2007: Florida defeats Ohio State, 41-14, in the BCS National Championship Game (How poetic!)
Oct. 1, 2009: Signs a contract extension that pays $4.01 million per year for the six seasons (Please note that it’s now 2011, not 2014…)
Jan. 8, 2009: Florida defeats Oklahoma, 24-14, in the BCS National Championship Game
Dec. 6, 2009: Admitted to a hospital in Gainesville, Fla. with chest pains and dehydration.
Dec. 26, 2009: Reveals the Dec. 6 episode and announces that he will resign following the Gators’ Sugar Bowl appearance on New Year’s Day
Dec. 27, 2009: Just kidding! Meyer announced that he’ll take a leave of absence instead of resigning. Returns in March.
2010: Coaches Florida to an 8-5 record, including a 37-24 win over Penn State on Jan. 1, 2011 in the Outback Bowl, closing his career at Florida with a 65-13 record.
Dec. 8, 2010: Announces he will retire at the end of the season for the same reasons he had cited a year before: health and family concerns.
Jan. 31, 2011: Named by ESPN to its college football coverage team
Nov. 23, 2011: The Plain Dealer and other sources report that Meyer will be named the next head football coach at Ohio State at the end of this season.

So, looking at his record, it’s consistently football. This is a football guy and whatever profession he chooses, it will always have something to do with football. Now, is he going to STAY at Ohio State? Is this a match made in heaven? Or is this just another stepping stone he’ll leap off of when he has a more lucrative opportunity? Will his former relationship with ESPN effect the Ohio State game coverage? Sources suggest that he has a lot of pull at the network, but shouldn’t things like that stay neutral?

This is the 3rd NFL game of the day, with the Lion’s losing to the Packers, and Dallas beating Miami earlier in the day.

Alex Smith closed the half by tossing an interception, which is the worst thing he could have done. The 49er’s were driving and had enough time to setup a field goal.

In the 2nd half, the Wolverines came out with fire on defense and shut the Wildcats down, winning the game easily with a final score of 42-24.

Michigan finished with 529 yards of total offense, with Denard contributing 338 yards passing and tacking on 117 yard rushing. Despite having big yards passing, Robinson was erratic, throwing three picks which ties a career high for him.

Many have compared this years Michigan team to the past two seasons, but the 2nd half adjustments are something we haven’t seen around here for a while.

Michigan stays on the road next week, playing at rival Michigan State.

Additional Notes:
Michigan has won nine of the last 11 meetings vs Northwestern.
The Wolverines were playing their first road game of the season after winning their first five at home.
Denard has 9 interceptions on the year, which leads the Big Ten.

Detroit got off to a hot start in the first inning, hitting two home-runs on two consecutive pitches putting New York in a hole early.

The hero’s of the game have to be the Tigers pitching staff. Holding the Yankee’s to two runs considering the situation they were in all game was breath-taking. New York ended up leaving 11 men on base.

Detroit is off to play Texas on Saturday. New York is going to face some difficult questions, particularly some of their stars (ahem A-Rod) who left a lot of runs on base.

The 53 hour shut down of one of the nation’s busiest interstates, the 405, is expected to cause unparalleled delays and the kind of gridlock traffic Los Angeles has never seen before. The closure, which will happen July 16th and 17th will allow construction crews to demolish a bridge as part of a $1 billion project to widen the freeway.

LA City Transportation Officials began warning Angelenos about the disaster being called “Carmageddon” a month and a half ago through signs, notices and even celebrities announcements. However, they still anticipate traffic to be backed up as far as 60 miles!

To try and help alleviate some of the pain, charter helicopter’s are offering taxi services to those who need have no choice but to leave the house this weekend. For $400, one company is offering “romantic” helicopter rides complete with champagne for couples who want to fly over disastrous traffic jam that is sure to ensue. Seriously though, why would you do that?

Think that things are getting blown way out of proportion? Los Angeles Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa reinforces the warning by saying, “If you think the 405 is gridlocked during the week, you haven’t seen anything yet. My message is to stay home. Or go on vacation. Walk. Go on a bike. But do not get in your car and go anywhere near the West Side. It’s going to be a mess.”

Awesome.

“I am so proud and excited to announce the birth of our daughter Harper Seven Beckham. She weighed a healthy 7lbs 10oz and arrived at 7.55 this morning, here in LA. Victoria is doing really well and her brothers are delighted to have a baby sister xx.”

Also in Los Angeles, actress Kate Hudson and her fiancee Matt Bellamy welcomed “a healthy baby boy” into the world according to Hudson’s rep. Kate had a “hunch” that she was carrying a girl, but didn’t want to find out the sex of the baby until it was born.

Friday, a US Army Veteran who lost both of his legs and suffered brain injury in Iraq, was thrown from a roller coaster and died.

Sergeant James Hackemer, 29, was riding in the the front row of the Ride of Steel roller coaster at the Darien Lake Theme Park in Buffalo, New York when the accident happened. The roller coaster climbs up to 200 ft, and reaches speed of 70mph.

Hackemer lost both of his legs in 2008 after being hit by a roadside bomb while deployed in Iraq.

The veteran’s mother spoke to reporters saying, “It’s going to help a little bit that he was happy. We shouldn’t have had him for these last three years and four months.” She told Buffalo news that Hackemer had to be assisted onto the ride but that “he was doing what he wanted to do.”

The theme park’s website released a statement saying that they are “deeply saddened” by the incident. Ride of Steel is closed while undergoing investigation, while the rest of the theme park remains open.

Former First Lady, and co-founder of the Betty Ford center for addiction, Betty Ford, has died Friday evening at the age of 93.

Betty Ford was the widow of the 38th President of the United States, Gerald Ford, who died in 2006. She was known for her outspoken nature and work with women’s advocacy. In 1982, Ford opened the Betty Ford center for addiction after struggling with alcoholism and prescription drug abuse herself several years prior. The Betty Ford center remains one of the nation’s most well-known centers for rehabilitation.

The director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum confirms the sad news and a family member adds that Ford died at her bedside with family close by.

Thursday, Florida judge, Judge Belvin Perry, sentenced Anthony to jail for four consecutive years on account of her lying multiple times to police officers during the investigation. She also must pay $1,000 for each count. The court gave her the maximum sentencing they possibly could.

However, since Casey Anthony has been in jail since October 2008, she will be receiving credit for her time already served, therefore the “innocent” Anthony will be released from prison July 13, next week.

Protesters (and several Anthony supporters) gathered outside the courthouse yelling and holding signs, one with a picture of Casey and duct tape over her mouth.

Last week, Brazil approved the construction of a monster dam that will threaten the Amazon.

The Belo Monte dam, which is scheduled for completion in 2015, will be the world’s third largest hydropower facility and will generate over 11 megawatts of electricity by blocking the Xingu River, one of the Amazon’s largest tributaries. As a result, 120,000 acres of surrounding rainforest will be flooded, and 20,000 of the area’s indigenous people will be displaced.

While the Brazilian government insists that the dam is a much needed solution for their energy needs, it does not excuse, nor negate the ecological devastation that will take place because of these “needs.”

Celebrities such as Sting and director James Cameron have spoken out against the building of the dam. James Cameron describes the issue as a “real life” version of his film, Avatar.

If you would like to speak out against this devastation and stop the building of the Belo Monte dam, please visit Amazon Watch and sign the petition to save the Amazon HERE
