McDonalds’ $1 Billion Makeover

USA Today reported that McDonalds will dump around $1 Billion dollars into a company wide re-vamp that will attempt to add a node of sophistication to a brand with a notoriously sketchy reputation.

The overhaul will include adding flat screen TV’s, couches, wood tables, and muted color schemes to select locations in an effort to make McDonalds a place for socializing and business, or in other words…Starbucks. Can a company who has, for the last 70 years, prided themselves on getting people in, out, and satisfied in record time really hope to compete with the world’s largest coffee house chain/hangout place?

Starbucks was built for, and marketed to people who yearn for nothing more than a cozy chair, a laptop outlet, Paul Simon, and a cup of their favorite joe. On the flip side, McDonalds’ customers expect convenient, speedy service without the bells and whistles. It would seem that their 58 million consumers per day aren’t looking to them to provide a place to read the paper. The two establishments have a wildly different user base, and generally speaking, very little in common. McDonalds may very well be shooting themselves in the foot with this move, and in a few words: I’m NOT lovin’ it.
