Romanian Media Mogul Sorin Ovidiu Vantu Arrested

Sorin Ovidiu Vantu, who controls Realitatea Media group, has been arrested for 24 hours after being accused by the Realitatea Media manager Sebastian Ghita of blackmail. According to Ghita, who runs Asesoft, Vantu has asked him for EUR 150,000 or he would cancel the contract between Asesoft and Realitatea Media.

The two companies are already in another battle where Asesoft plans to file a penal complaint against  Sorin Ovidiu Vantu and his associates, saying the investors have put pressure on Asesoft, which currently manages Realitatea Media, and have tried to interfere with the editorial side of the media company.

Telephone transcripts released from a conversation between the two show Vantu, asking manager Sebastian Ghita to pay €150,000 (US$218,000) to end a management contract.

He threatens to harm Ghita, and says that he has “shot dead hundreds,” of gangsters and buried them “in the Moldovan hills.” Realitatea TV is critical of the government and Vantu is disliked by President Traian Basescu.
